May Board Meeting Report


  • Monday, May 22, 2023 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday afternoon at Charles Mason Board of Education Building for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:
    Board members present: Jeffrey Brewer (President), Jenifer Kimbrough (Vice President), Nicky Barnes, Anna Comer and Daniel Odrezin

    Board Meeting Agenda
    The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting (April 10) and the most recent called board meetings (May 4 and May 18).

    Recognitions:

    • Sophia Li was recognized for being named 1 of 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars nationwide.

    • Jack Heaps was recognized winning the 6A Bryant/Jordan Scholar Athlete Award.

    • The varsity girls track team was recognized for winning the 2023 6A outdoor track state championship. Click here for the full story.

    • The varsity boys and girls tennis teams were recognized for winning both 6A tennis state championships. Click here for the full story.

    • The varsity boys and girls golf teams were recognized for their respective finishes in the state championship tournament. The girls had their best finish (4th) as a team in the last decade and the boys finished in third place.

    • The MBJH tennis teams were recognized for their finish at the metro tournament. The boys won the tournament while the girls finished in second place.

    • MBJH students, Aubrey Kilgore and Kate Carter, were recognized for being named a State Visual Arts Winner!

    • Members of the 2022-23 PTO Council were recognized for their commitment and service to their local school as well as the school district throughout this past school year.

    Reports to the Board:
    Brasfield and Gorrie’s Mike Culwell presented the monthly construction update to board members. Then, the MBS CSFO Kari Austin presented the board members with the school district’s monthly financial statements which were unanimously approved. 

    Old business:
    There was no old business.

    New business:
    The board unanimously approved the latest personnel changes and unanimously approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold.

    The board then tabled the Board of Education Meeting Calendar for the 2023-24 school year.

    May announcements:

    The last day of school for students will be Wednesday, May 24, 2023.

    The Mountain Brook Schools Learning Conference will be held at Mountain Brook High School this summer on June 20 and 21. All MBS employees are encouraged to attend! Click here for more information.

    The next Board Meeting will take place on Monday, June 12th at 3:30 p.m. at the Mountain Brook Board of Education (Charles Mason Building).
