• Hollis retires from MBS

Mountain Brook Schools has bid farewell to one of its longest-tenured and most highly respected central office employees. Carol Hollis, who joined the school system in 1992, retired on June 30 after nearly three decades of service.

“This job was an answer to prayer,” Hollis said. “I’m grateful for the relationships that I’ve formed through these 28.5 years. These have not just been my coworkers; they’ve been my family.”

Hollis worked as a receptionist for her first three years in Mountain Brook before transitioning to the role of administrative assistant for curriculum and instruction in 1995. She remained in that position until 2011, when she became executive assistant to the superintendent.

Hollis served in that capacity for the past nine years.

"She’s a rock of a person and the wisest individual in the building,” MBS Superintendent Dr. Dicky Barlow said. “That type of wisdom next to you can do nothing but make you a better person, and that’s what I’d say about Carol. In my years of being around her, she has made me a much better person.”

Hollis excelled throughout her career in Mountain Brook, earning a performance award the first year that classified staff became eligible to win. But she will be remembered for more than her achievements.

Each day, Hollis brought calmness, class, humor, and warmth that will be missed greatly at the central office. Director of Administrative Services Dr. Lisa Beckham described her longtime friend as the glue that helped hold the building together.

“She did a stellar job at her job. But, more importantly, she is kind and caring,” Beckham said. “She is one of the best people I know. I love her like a sister.”

Hollis plans to spend more time with her family in retirement. She is married with two sons and five grandchildren who reside in central Alabama, and her mother lives in South Carolina.

Cyndi Griffin has assumed Hollis' role as executive assistant to the superintendent. She previously served as the administrative assistant for special education.
