October 27, 2021 -- The Mountain Brook High School volleyball team defended their title, winning the 6A state championship versus St. Paul’s on Wednesday afternoon at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham. The Spartans won in three sets (25-17, 27-25 25-19) to claim their third straight state championship and sixth in program history.
“We don’t have one superstar that every team can scout,” head coach Mattie Gardner said. “We have a team of 15 superstars that work so well together.”
Spartan senior, Greer Golden, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Lucy Redden and Hannah Parant also represented Mountian Brook on the all-tournament team. Golden recorded 13 kills in the championship match
“I’m so proud of my team and I’m proud of my fellow seniors,” Golden said postgame. “We’ve led the team all the way to this moment. Throughout this tournament, we showed so much grit and that lit a fire under us.”
Gardner wraps up her first season as the Spartans’ head coach with a 43-12 record. Mountain Brook defeated St. James and Homewood on Wednesday in the quarterfinal and semi-final rounds to earn the right to play for the title.
Mountain Brook’s 2021 resume includes an undefeated record in area play, Area 9 champions, North Super Regional champions and now 6A state champions.
Gardner said her team had a great feeling going into Wednesday’s finale.
“There was this resolve that it doesn’t matter how well they play, we were going to come out on top, Gardner said.
