April Board Meeting Report


  • Tuesday, April 11, 2023 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday afternoon at Charles Mason Board of Education Building for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:
    Board members present: Jeffrey Brewer (President), Jenifer Kimbrough (Vice President), Nicky Barnes, Anna Comer and Daniel Odrezin

    Board Meeting Agenda
    The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting (March 13) and the most recent called board meetings (March 23 and April 5).

    Recognitions:

    • The MBS robotics programs were recognized for their recent performance at the state championships. We had multiple students and teams who have qualified for the world's competition in May. Congratulations students and sponsors!

    • The varsity boys basketball team was recognized for their 6A runner-up finish in the 2023 AHSAA state tournament.

    • The MBHS math team was recognized for their 4th place finish at state last month.

    • Philip Holley was recognized for his service as Principal of Mountain Brook High School. Last month he announced his upcoming retirement upon the completion of the current school year. Carrie Busby has been named the high school’s next Principal.

    Reports to the Board:
    Brasfield and Gorrie’s Mike Culwell presented the monthly construction update to board members. Then, the MBS CSFO Kari Austin presented the board members with the school district’s monthly financial statements which were unanimously approved. Austin also reported a budget amendment which was unanimously approved by the board.

    Old business:
    There was no old business.

    New business:
    The board unanimously approved the latest personnel changes and unanimously approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold.

    The board meeting calendar approval was changed to move the May board meeting from May 15 to May 22, 2023.

    Bid #2023-003 was unanimously approved and awarded to Jamco, Inc. for boilers.

    Bid #2023-004 was unanimously approved and awarded to Tom Barrow Company for Vertical Fan Coil Units.

    The board unanimously approved the purchase of a new video board for Spartan Arena.

    The board unanimously approved the 240-day employee summer work schedule allowing employees to work four 10-hour days if they so choose.

    April announcements:
    The annual Mountain Brook Schools Student Showcase will be held in Crestline Village on April 24, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

    MBHS graduation will be held May 18, 2023 at the Pete Hanna Center at Samford University.

    The next Board Meeting will take place on Monday, May 22nd at 3:30 p.m. at the Mountain Brook Board of Education (Charles Mason Building).
