  • Monday, May 9, 2022 – Over the weekend, the Mountain Brook High School varsity boys and girls track teams competed at the state championship meet in Gulf Shores. The girls team won the 6A state title, edging Northridge 116-111.5 in team points.

The girls team has now won 12 state championships in outdoor track, this being the first since 2011.

“We have an extremely talented group,” head coach Michael McGovern said of his girls team. “We were hoping for a triple crown to win cross country, indoor and outdoor. But coming up just short in indoor really fueled these girls to have a tremendous outdoor season.”

The girls scored 34 points in the last two events. Spartan runners finished 1-2-3 in the 800m and the 1600m to propel the team to the top of class 6A. Lucy Benton set a school and state record with a blazing 2:10.90 in the 800m.

Mountain Brook has a plethora of top performances in the meet:

    First-place finishes:

    • Girls 4x400m relay
    • Girls 4x800m relay
    • Regan Riley 3200m, 1600m
    • Lucy Benton 800m (state record)
    • Davis Plowden 800m

    Second-place finishes:

    • Reagan Riley 800m
    • Lucy Benton 1600m
    • Ellie Fooshee - javelin

    Third-place finishes:

    • Hunter Anderson 1600m, 800m
    • Lucy Redden 100m hurdles
    • Boys 4x800m relay

Thirty-five Spartan athletes donned the green and gold at the state meet. McGovern said he’s extremely proud of both of his teams for battling the elements.

“The outdoor state meet is a three-day marathon,” McGovern said. “We fought through rain delays and stayed fresh in order to compete at the highest level. I thought that really showed our resilience.”

The girls team championship is the 177th total state championship in Mountain Brook High School athletics history.  For more information on MBHS track and athletics, follow @MBHStrack and @mbs_athletics on Twitter.
