February Board Meeting Report


  • Tuesday, February 14, 2023 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday afternoon at Mountain Brook High School for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:

    Board members present: Jeffrey Brewer (President), Nicky Barnes, Anna Comer and Daniel Odrezin

    Board Meeting Agenda
    The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting (January 9) and the most recent called board meeting (January 31).

    Recognitions:
    Four of the five participants from the 2023 District Spelling Bee were present to be recognized for representing their individual school as their school’s Spelling Bee champion. Members from the MBHS finance classes were recognized for their performance in the recent Stock Market Game/SIFMA Foundation. The MBHS girls indoor track team was recognized for their recent state championship. Additionally, track head coach, Michael McGovern, was recognized for his leadership in being an administrative coach at the AHSAA summer North/South cross country meet. Lastly, MBHS senior, Reagan Riley, was recognized for being named the 2022 Girls Cross Country Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Alabama.

    Reports to the Board:
    MBS Facilities Director, Tommy Prewitt, and Brasfield and Gorrie’s Mike Culwell presented their monthly construction update to board members. Then, the MBS CSFO Kari Austin presented the board members with the school district’s monthly financial statements. 

    Old business:
    There was no old business.

    New business:
    The board unanimously approved the latest personnel changes and unanimously approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold. The board unanimously approved Policy J-7a - Optional School Attendance Area, a policy that has already been in place. The following materials were tabled for community review and input:

    February announcements:
    There will be an E-Day for students/Teacher Professional Learning Day on Friday, February 17. Also, there will be no school on Monday, February 20, 2023 in observance of Presidents Day.
    The next Board Meeting will take place on Monday, March 13th at 3:30 p.m. at Mountain Brook Junior High.
