• MBS hires Halasz to lead Lady Spartans

The Mountain Brook Board of Education on Monday, May 18, approved the hire of Sara Halasz as Mountain Brook High Schoolโ€™s varsity girls head basketball coach. Halasz held the same position for the past four seasons at Pinson Valley High School.

โ€œFrom the beginning of our search, the administration, athletic department, and advisory committeeโ€™s goal was to find a coach that possessed the qualities, characteristics, and attributes we found to be important for this position,โ€ MBHS Athletics Director Benny Eaves said. โ€œThrough the interview process, numerous meetings, and extensive conversations with contacts within the basketball coaching community โ€” both locally and nationally โ€” we are confident that we have the right coach in Sara Halasz to direct our program. โ€

Halasz enjoyed a stellar playing career from 2008-09 to 2013-14 at the University of New Mexico, where she earned both bachelorโ€™s and masterโ€™s degrees. She tallied more than 1,000 points and 500 rebounds as a guard for the Lobos. Following her collegiate career, Halasz played professionally in Germany and the Czech Republic before she started coaching.

โ€œIโ€™m just super humbled and super thankful for the opportunity, and thankful for those who supported me along this journey,โ€ Halasz said. โ€œI canโ€™t wait to get started in Mountain Brook.โ€

In addition to her wealth of experience, Halasz comes to Mountain Brook with a strong network of mentors that includes NCAA Division I coaches in the Big Ten, SEC, and Mountain West.

โ€œIn my discussions with those mentors, she was described as humble, incredibly hard-working, an engaging and encouraging teacher of the game, and a bright star in the coaching profession,โ€ Eaves said.
