March Board of Education Meeting Recap


  • Wednesday, March 15, 2023 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday afternoon at Mountain Brook Junior High School for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:
    Board members present: Jeffrey Brewer (President), Jenifer Kimbrough (Vice President), Nicky Barnes, Anna Comer and Daniel Odrezin

    Board Meeting Agenda

    The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting (February 13).

    Recognitions:

    • Crestline Speech Language Pathologist, Elizabeth Gwaltney, was recognized for her SHAA Honors of the Association Award.

    • Mary Cates Freeman was recognized for placing third at the 2023 State Superintendent’s Visual Art Show Exhibit.

    • The MBHS wrestling team was recognized for winning the team duals state championship and for their third place performance at the traditional state championship meet.

    • MBHS multimedia students were recognized for their 50 awards from the ASPA convention.

    • MBHS volleyball head coach, Mattie Gardner, was recognized for being named a coach for the AHSAA North/South All-Star Game.

    • Sophia Li was recognized for being named a 2023 Coca-Cola Scholar.

    • The MBHS Dorians were recognized for their 4th place finish at their national competition.

    • MBJH Principal, Donald Clayton, was recognized for his award from Montevallo for Educational Leadership.

    Reports to the Board:
    MBS Facilities Director, Tommy Prewitt, and Brasfield and Gorrie’s Mike Culwell presented their monthly construction update to board members. Then, the MBS CSFO Kari Austin presented the board members with the school district’s monthly financial statements, which were unanimously approved. Finally, Steve Moore presented the board members with the FY22 Audit Report.

    Old business:
    The iCEV - Career Prep Textbook and 2024-2025 Academic Calendar were unanimously approved by the board members.

    New business:
    The board unanimously approved the latest personnel changes and unanimously approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold. Jeffrey Brewer excused himself due to professional affiliation before the remaining four board members unanimously approved the MBJH athletic field bid (*note that this is a city project taking place on school property, thus approval is required*)

    March announcements:
    All Mountain Brook Schools and offices will be closed March 27-31, 2023 for spring break.

    The next Board Meeting will take place on Monday, April 10th at 3:30 p.m. at the Mountain Brook Board of Education (Charles Mason Building).

    The annual Student Showcase will be held in Crestline Village on April 24, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
