Tuesday, May 9, 2023 – The Mountain Brook High School varsity girls outdoor track team defended their title last week in Gulf Shores winning the 6A state championship and completing a ‘trifecta.’ The MBHS girls cross country and track programs won all three state championships in their sport this academic year: cross country, indoor track and now outdoor track. This was the fifth time for such an occurrence in program history with the most recent ‘trifecta’ occuring in the 2006-2007 school year.*
“What they were able to do not only all season but all year has been remarkable,” head coach Michael McGovern said. “Not every team is the same and the girls' continued commitment to excellence was evident in their training dating back to last summer. As far as this specific (outdoor) team, it was really a cool thing to see various girls step up all season and answer the call to help this team reach the top of the podium again.”
The outdoor track program had 35 athletes compete at the state meet and had 11 individuals/relay teams finish on the podium (top three in their event):
Girls:
-
800m run: Lucy Benton (2) and Reagan Riley (3)
-
1600m run: Reagan Riley (1) and Lucy Benton (2)
-
3200m run: Reagan Riley (1)
-
4x400m relay (2)
-
4x800m relay (1)
-
Pole Vault: Annie Kerr (3)
Boys:
-
400m dash: Davis Lee (3)
-
4x400m relay (2)
-
4x800m relay (3)
“I’m proud of the way each of our 35 athletes competed in their respective event,” McGovern said. “We had some great individual performances on the boys side and I’m extremely pleased with what each individual athlete was able to accomplish."
The girls championship is their 13th outdoor state title in program history and marks the sixth time the team has been able to win back-to-back outdoor championships.
Mountain Brook High School has now won seven state championships in the 2022-23 school year (boys cross country, girls cross country, wrestling duals, girls indoor track, boys tennis, girls tennis and girls outdoor track). This ties the school record for most state championships in an academic year (seven championships won in both 1974-75 and 2006-2007). Mountain Brook Athletics extends its total state championship count to 186 across all programs.
* Past Spartan girls cross country/track ’trifectas’ also occurred in the 1977-76, 1990-91 and 1994-95 school years.
