MBHS Athletics Rank Among The Top Nationally

  • The MaxPreps Cup determines the best overall high school sports programs in the country based on a points system.

  • August 11, 2022 – Mountain Brook High School athletics has been named one of the top athletic programs in the nation for the 2021-22 school year according to the recently released MaxPreps Cup rankings. MBHS was ranked the top athletic program in the state of Alabama, the number 5 program in the nation, and the number 2 program in the nation among public schools.

“Our student-athletes and coaches work year-round to be the best they can be,” Benny Eaves, Mountain Brook Athletic Director said. “This recognition is a testament to their commitment to success. In this community, we have athletes representing areas from little league all the way up to the NBA.”

According to the website, the MaxPreps Cup uses a school’s state championships, runner-up, and national rankings to determine a point scale.

“Points are awarded on a weighted basis with larger states receiving more points than smaller state (due to more competition), more popular sports (based on NFHS participation survey) receiving more points than less popular sports and larger schools gaining more points than smaller schools (again based on more competition).”

Ranking as the top high school in Alabama with 1,835 points, Mountain Brook placed higher than any school in ‘hotbed recruiting’ states like Florida, California, and Texas. MaxPreps noted that the state of Georgia was the most competitive state with 10 schools scoring over 1,000 points. Alabama had seven schools score above the 1,000-point mark.

Carmel (Indiana) was the only public school ranked ahead of Mountain Brook, coming in with 1,846 points. Last year Carmel High School had approximately 5,300 students enrolled compared to Mountain Brook’s 1,041 students (grades 10-12). Carmel won four state championships last year in Indiana compared to Mountain Brook’s six titles in Alabama’s class 6A.

The MaxPreps Cup top 5 overall rankings for 2021-22 are as follows:

    1. Westminster (GA - 2,380 points)

    2. La Salle Academy (RI - 2,126 points)

    3. Marist (GA - 1,945 points)

    4. Carmel (IN - 1,846 points)

    5. Mountain Brook (AL - 1,835 points)

Last school year, Mountain Brook won state championships in girls volleyball, girls cross country, boys golf, boys soccer, girls tennis, and girls outdoor track. The Spartans collected runner-up trophies in boys cross country, girls indoor track, and boys tennis.

In addition to the team accolades last year, two MBHS athletes were named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Alabama.
