September Board Meeting Report


  • Friday, September 16, 2022 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday afternoon at the Charles Mason Building for the school’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:

    Board members present: Jeffrey Brewer (President), Jenifer Kimbrough (Vice President), Nicky Barnes, Anna Comer, and Daniel Odrezin

    Board Meeting Agenda

    The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting (August 8, 2022) and the first budget hearing (Sept. 6, 2022). 

    Recognitions:

    MBHS French teacher, John Binet, was recognized for recently being named a recipient of the Yale Educator Award. The MBHS athletic department was recognized for being named the top athletic program in Alabama in 2021-22 along with being a top 5 program nationally. Leadership Mountain Brook students were introduced to the board. Click here to read more about these 18 students. Rachel Weingartner of the Mountain Brook City Schools Foundation and members of the 2022-23 PTO Council were introduced to the board members as well.

    Reports to the Board:

    Lanie Kent, MBS Assistant Director of Curriculum & Instruction presented board members with a report about the 2022 New Teacher Orientation along with the help of Cherokee Bend’s Rachel Alexander and MBHS’s Anthony Marino. Dr. Barlow delivered an enrollment report to the board members. Mountain Brook Schools has 4,328 students this school year. MBS Facilities Director, Tommy Prewitt, and Brasfield and Gorrie’s Mike Culwell presented their monthly construction update to board members and finally, MBS Chief School Financial Officer, Kari Austin, presented the board with this month’s financial statements.

    Following the financial statements, Austin presented the FY 2023 2nd Budget Hearing and reported that no comments had been made on the September 6 first budget hearing. Board members then approved the FY 2023 budget for Mountain Brook Schools.

    Old business:

    There was no old business at this board meeting.

    New business: 

    Policy J-31 and J-33 regarding field trips and excursions were tabled for community review and input.

    The Mountain Brook Schools Extended Learning Opportunities Act Policy was also tabled for community review and input.

    The HVAC parts and supplies bid #2022-001 was approved.

    The maintenance vehicles bid #2022-002 was approved.

    The board then approved the latest personnel changes and approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold.

    Weather Day (no school) on Monday, October 10, 2022

    Next Board Meeting: Monday, October 17th at 3:30 p.m. at Brookwood Forest Elementary School.
