November Board Meeting Report

  • Various groups of students were recognized along with the six Teachers of the Year from each school.


  • Tuesday, November 15, 2022 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education members met on Monday afternoon at Cherokee Bend Elementary for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:

    Board members present: Jeffrey Brewer (President), Jenifer Kimbrough (Vice President), Nicky Barnes, Anna Comer and Daniel Odrezin

    Board Meeting Agenda

    The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last two board meetings (October 17 and the called board meeting on October 31).

    Recognitions:

    The varsity boys and girls cross country teams were recognized for winning the 2022 6A state championships. The varsity volleyball team was recognized for their run in the 6A state tournament which concluded in the semifinals. The Mountain Brook High School's debate team was recognized for their program’s success as a whole as well as two specific members for their accomplishments. Patton Hahn has been named a member of the USA Debate Development Team and Sophia Li has been named a semifinalist for the Coca Cola Scholars Program. Additionally, the program’s coach, Liz Wood Weas, was recognized for being named the 2022 National Middle School Debate Coach of the Year! Finally, each MBS principal recognized their individual school’s Teacher of the Year

    Reports to the Board:

    MBS Facilities Director, Tommy Prewitt, and Brasfield and Gorrie’s Mike Culwell presented their monthly construction update to board members. Then, the MBS CSFO Kari Austin presented the board members with the school district’s monthly financial statements.

    Old business:

    There was no old business.

    New business: 

    A unanimous approval from the board will now allow the city council to construct new batting cages at Cherokee Bend Elementary. Dr. Missy Brooks proposed the new Career Prep standards to the board members. Those standards have been tabled for community review and input. The board then unanimously approved the latest personnel changes and unanimously approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold.

    November announcements:

    The All In Parent Conference will take place on Tuesday, November 15 from 5:30-7:55 at Mountain Brook High School.

    The varsity football team will take on Hartselle on Friday night at home at 7:00.

    All Mountain Brook Schools will be closed November 23-25 in observance of Thanksgiving.

    The next board meeting will take place on Monday, December 12th at 3:30 p.m. at Crestline Elementary School.
