Anna Comer will serve a five-year term on the Mountain Brook Board of Education. She will replace Tommy Luckie, whose term expires in June. 

April 28, 2021 — The Mountain Brook City Council on Monday, April 26, appointed Anna Comer to a five-year term on the Mountain Brook Board of Education. She will replace the school board’s longest-serving member, Tommy Luckie, whose second term expires in June. 

“It has been a pleasure to serve alongside Tommy and grow from his vast experience,” Board President Nicky Barnes said. “He has provided invaluable guidance to the school system for the past decade and leaves an enduring legacy. Nevertheless, we look forward to welcoming Anna and working with her to further the mission of Mountain Brook Schools.”

Comer holds both a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and a master’s degree in counseling education from the University of Alabama. She served as a substance abuse and prevention therapist — as well as a family and youth intervention program coordinator — at Chilton-Shelby Mental Health Services from 1994 to 1998. From 1998 to 2002, she was a behavior program specialist at Shelby County Schools. 

Comer has four children, three of whom are enrolled in Mountain Brook Schools.

“The Mountain Brook school system has been such an amazing system for my family, and I truly want to give back,” Comer said. “I hope that I can be a good collaborator on the Board and a good communicator with the community. I’m excited about this opportunity.”

Comer succeeds Luckie, a lifelong Spartan who has served on the school board since 2011, including three years as Board vice president. Luckie grew up in Mountain Brook and graduated from Mountain Brook High School in 1972. Years later, his three children matriculated through the school system as well. 

Luckie’s professional expertise has benefited Mountain Brook Schools greatly over the past decade. As the Chairman and CEO of Luckie & Co., one of the Southeast’s largest marketing and communications firms, he has provided valuable insight and perspective.

“It has been a privilege and honor for me to serve on the Board with a group of distinguished individuals and help guide a school system that means so much to me,” Luckie said. “While a lot has changed, a lot has also stayed the same. During my time on the Board, we have always made decisions in the best interest of our students.” 

Comer will begin her term in June and serve alongside four other Board members: Barnes, Brad Sklar, Jeffrey Brewer, and Jenifer Kimbrough. Collectively, the Board serves as an oversight body that provides direction to the school system and sets policies that shape its future.
