Student groups and faculty members were recognized at the January Board of Education meeting at Mountain Brook Elementary on Monday, January 9, 2023.

Tuesday, January 10, 2023 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday afternoon at Mountain Brook Elementary for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:
Board members present: Jeffrey Brewer (President), Jenifer Kimbrough (Vice President), Nicky Barnes, Anna Comer and Daniel Odrezin

Board Meeting Agenda
The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting (December 12) and the most recent called board meeting (December 15).

Recognitions:
PTO President, Shannon Holt, recognized the board members and presented a check on behalf of the PTO as part of Board of Education Appreciation Month. Lyndsi Kirk (CBS) and Bryan Rosenstiel (MBHS) were recognized for being named the MBS Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year district representatives. MBJH coach, Randy Stephens, was recognized for being named the 2022 Girls Cross Country Metro Coach of the Year. The MBHS Theatre department was recognized for their December performance at the Trumbauer State Tournament. Finally, the MBHS football team was recognized for their state championship run last semester. 

Reports to the Board:
MBHS Band Director, Jason Smith, spoke to the board about the band’s recent trip to Italy and playing on New Year’s Day in a parade overseas. MBS Facilities Director, Tommy Prewitt, and Brasfield and Gorrie’s Mike Culwell presented their monthly construction update to board members. Then, the MBS CSFO Kari Austin presented the board members with the school district’s monthly financial statements. 

Old business:
Policy G-16 regarding staff reimbursement for travel was unanimously approved.

New business:
The board unanimously approved the latest personnel changes and unanimously approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold. The bid #2023-003 regarding windows for Mountain Brook Elementary was approved. The board members also approved the extension for the contract of Brasfield and Gorrie.

January announcements:
There will be no school on Monday, January 16, 2023, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The next Board Meeting will take place on Monday, February 13th at 3:30 p.m. at Mountain Brook High School.
