Dr. Barlow Named Alabama Superintendent of the Year

  • Dicky Barlow was named the State Superintendents of Alabama '2023 Schneider Electric Superintendent of the Year' at the SSA's fall conference in Florence, AL.

  • Wednesday, October 12, 2022 – School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA) and Schneider Electric have announced that Mountain Brook Schools Superintendent Dr. Dicky Barlow has been named the 2023 Alabama Superintendent of the Year. Dr. Barlow was named one of nine finalists in September.

“This is a tremendous honor and would not be possible without the work of all of our teachers, staff members, students and incredible family and community members,” Barlow said. “I want to congratulate each of the finalists as well for the outstanding jobs they are doing in their school systems and communities.”

As a finalist, Dr. Barlow represented District 5, which comprises 16 school districts in the central Alabama region. Former Mountain Brook Schools Superintendent Dr. Charles Mason won this award in 2004.

“I cannot imagine a better choice than Dr. Dicky Barlow to represent Alabama School Superintendents as their Superintendent of the Year for 2023," Dr. Mason said. "During his tenure in Mountain Brook Schools, Dr. Barlow has secured the financial status of the school system through a successful tax vote by the citizens, embarked on a much-needed expansion and renovation of facilities, and navigated the unprecedented challenges facing superintendents during the Covid pandemic. His commitment to the well-being and academic success of students, his commitment to ongoing professional learning for all teachers and staff, and his basic goodness as a person are among the many reasons the Mountain Brook community is so fortunate to have him as the leader of their school system."

Per the SSA website, the Alabama Superintendent of the Year competes at the national level to become one of four nationwide finalists; represents Alabama at the AASA: The School Superintendents Association National Conference on Education in February; and is honored at a luncheon during the SSA Legislative Conference in Montgomery. Schneider Electric provides the winner with a Superintendent of the Year ring and travel expenses to the National Conference. Past winners are listed here.
