Wednesday, May 18, 2022 – The following students and groups were recognized at Monday’s monthly Board of Education meeting: 

Julianne Abenoja and Bickley Bowron

Julianne was recognized for her accomplishment of being named “Distinguished Young Woman of Alabama.” She was the winner among 45 contestants from across the state and will represent Alabama at the national competition in June. Click here to read more.

Julianne and Bickley were named national semi-finalists for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. They are two of the 14 students who represented the state of Alabama as semi-finalists.

Christopher Alexander

Christopher will represent the state of Alabama at the United States Special Olympics in the 800m run. The entire event will take place June 5-12 in Orlando. Track events are scheduled for June 6th and 7th. In addition to the 800m, Christopher will run the 400m and throw the mini-javelin.

MBHS Athletic Update

Helping Patriotism Prevail Essay

Middle school students from all over the country recently submitted an essay answering the question “what does it take to be a true patriot today?” Of the hundreds of students who submitted essays to this contest, ten were chosen as finalists. FIVE of those finalists were from Mountain Brook Junior High! Congratulations to Emmy Grace Cribbs, James Puckett, Anna Mayor, Hollis Thomason, and Eva Worthen. 

Additionally, Anna Mayor was awarded the distinguished Steve O'Dell Award! This award, which is named after the novel's main character, is given to the best overall essay.

McCray Faust

MBJH student, McCray Faust, recently won ‘Best in Show - Junior Division’ for her artwork in the Alabama State Council on the Arts. The Visual Arts Achievement Program Awards recognized McCray’s work at the state level after she placed at the district competition.

Crestline Art Students

Crestline had multiple students recognized for placing in their category at the Birmingham Center of Architecture Art Show. Congratulations to Liv Loper (Kindergarten - honorable mention), Maggie Schilleci (first grade - honorable mention), Drennen Haughton (second grade - first place), Lexie Whatley (fourth grade - second place), and Analei Dutton (fifth grade - first place).

PTO Council

The 2021-22 PTO Council was recognized for its year of service to the school system as well as each individual school. The council and its presidents helped put on events throughout the year and lead parent efforts in supporting the schools in a variety of ways.

“The work of the PTO council is a critical factor to the success of our schools,” Dr. Barlow said. “This group has gone above and beyond their job to help, encourage and celebrate our students and staff this year.”
