Wednesday, March 23, 20222 – Multiple Mountain Brook High School students have recently been awarded for their work in the field of computer science.

According to a release, the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Award for Aspirations in Computing builds a talent pool for the growing technical workforce and helps celebrate diversity in computing by honoring young women for their computing-related achievements and interests. Award recipients are selected based on their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing; leadership ability; academic history; and plans for post-secondary education. MBHS has several students awarded:

• Caley Record (Winner)
• Mary Midkiff (Honorable Mention)
• Laura Simpson (Honorable Mention)
• Ella Emblom (Honorable Mention)
• Sophia Li (Rising Star)
• Evelyn Berry (Certificate of Distinction)

Additionally, MBHS senior Mason Keller placed Honorable Mention in Computer Science and Mathematics division at the recent Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair at UAB. He presented research on how an automobile’s Event Data Recorder (EDR) data can be combined with the dashcam footage to further automotive safety standards.

“I am very proud of all of these students,” Fred Major, MBHS computer science teacher said. “They all are talented programmers and algorithmic thinkers. They spent a great deal of time outside of class working on projects for these awards. All of them had to prepare written responses of how their programs worked. I think these awards show the entire school system has prepared these students.”
