Tuesday, May 17, 2022 โ Mountain Brook boys soccer head coach, Joe Webb, has won 455 games at Mountain Brook but none bigger than Saturdayโs 2-1 win over Pelham in the state championship game at the John Hunt Soccer Complex in Huntsville.
The Spartans hoisted the first state championship trophy in program history after an overtime battle with Pelham. The Panthers scored 17 minutes into the contest and took a 1-0 lead into the break.
โWe are relentless and we have been all year,โ Webb said. โI just told our guys at halftime that we were going to break through. All it takes is one (goal). Donโt change. Be who you are and keep playing with relentless effort.โ
The breakthrough came just in time as tournament MVP, Vance Phillips, found the back of the net in the waning minutes of the second half, forcing the extra period. It was Phillips who would score again for the Spartans in overtime to claim the 6A boys state championship. The team leaped and made a circular sprint around the field in celebration of the title.
โThe joy in that moment couldnโt be made artificially,โ Webb said. โTheir celebration was an accumulation of months of hard work mixed with the satisfaction of โfinishing the jobโ.โ
The Spartans ended the season with a 25-2-2 record and are currently ranked as the number four team in the nation according to Maxpreps. After a 3-2-2 start to the season, the team won 22 consecutive games in a span of three months.
Seniors on this yearโs squad are โโAustin Davis, Camden Hemstreet, Andrew Thomason, Cole Knight, Joe Armstrong, Ryan Diamond, and manager Bud Sanders.
The championship is the 179th in Mountain Brook High School athletics history and the sixth of the school year for MBHS.
