Eaves led the Mountain Brook Athletic Department to new heights beginning in 2014 until his retirement on April 1, 2023.

Tuesday, April 4, 2023 – Mountain Brook Schools Athletic Director, Benny Eaves, retired on April 1, 2023 after 24 years of experience in coaching and athletic administration.

“This has been the greatest opportunity of my professional career and I cannot thank the people of Mountain Brook enough for my time here,” Eaves said. “I get choked up thinking about my years here and all the great people who made a positive impact on not only me but my family.”

Terry Cooper hired Eaves in 2007 to be the boys golf head coach and assist with football and boys basketball. Eaves replaced Cooper as athletic director in November 2014 and built upon the Spartans’ athletic success amassing 35 state championships across 11 different sports.

Eaves led the charge along with the Board of Education to insert the largest video board in the state at the high school level in August 2021 at Spartan Stadium. Under his tenure, Mountain Brook had a multitude of student-athletes compete at the next level in nearly every sport. Additionally, the Mountain Brook Schools athletic department was ranked the number five athletic department in the country among all high schools and number two among public schools in 2021-22 per Maxpreps.

“Our coaches and athletes have been (and will continue to be) able to compete at the highest level possible and win championships,” Eaves said. “But the ability to lead such extraordinary coaches and help student-athletes accomplish their goals and chase their dreams is what will stick with me the most.”

Those around Eaves say his work ethic made him such a valuable asset to Mountain Brook.

“Benny has a working motor like no other,” Mountain Brook High School Principal Philip Holley said. “Beyond the normal duties of administrative tasks, team/facility scheduling, coaching, leadership, communication and much more, he is a great friend. And he’s able to be a great friend and colleague all while juggling his myriad responsibilities. We will greatly miss having him around campus.”

MBS Superintendent Dr. Dicky Barlow said “Benny has contributed more than he knows to those around him in his years of coaching and administration. We, as a school system, are a better place because of the time he spent with us. We wish nothing but the best for Benny and his family as he enters his next chapter of life.”
