October Board Meeting Report


  • Friday, October 21, 2022 – The Mountain Brook Schools Board of Education met Monday afternoon at Brookwood Forest Elementary for the district’s monthly board meeting. Below is a rundown of the meeting:

    Board members present: Jeffrey Brewer (President), Jenifer Kimbrough (Vice President), Anna Comer and Daniel Odrezin

    Board Meeting Agenda

    The meeting opened by approving minutes from the last board meeting (September 12, 2022).

    Recognitions:

    The National Merit Semifinalists and Commended students were recognized for their performance on the PSAT. MBHS senior, Cate Cooper, was recognized for being the high school’s 2022 Homecoming Queen. From Mountain Brook Junior High, Lisa Lewis was recognized for her acceptance into the American Geographical Society teacher fellowship program this school year. The seventh and eighth-grade volleyball teams were recognized for winning the Metro Championship this season. Each school’s Principal along with the School Resource Officers were recognized as well. Board President, Jeffrey Brewer, recognized Superintendent Dr. Dicky Barlow for being named the 2023 Superintendent of the Year for the state of Alabama.

    Reports to the Board:

    MBS Student Services Director, Amanda Hood, provided the Board with the district’s annual safety report and information regarding All In Mountain Brook’s on-going conferences. MBS Curriculum Director, Dr. Missy Brooks, presented the 2022 Student Assessment Report and 2022 Summer Professional Learning report. MBS Facilities Director, Tommy Prewitt, and Brasfield and Gorrie’s Mike Culwell presented their monthly construction update to board members.

    Old business:

    The Mountain Brook Schools Extended Learning Opportunities Act Policy was approved. Policy J-31 and J-33 regarding field trips and excursions were approved.

    New business: 

    The Superintendent’s annual evaluation passed and his contract was extended from 2024 through 2026.

    The board then approved the latest personnel changes and approved miscellaneous items as surplus so that they can be discarded/donated/sold.

    October announcements:

    The varsity volleyball team competes this week in the regional tournament in Huntsville.

    All Mountain Brook Schools and offices will be closed on November 11, 2022, in observance of Veterans Day.

    The next Board Meeting will take place on Monday, November 14th at 3:30 p.m. at Cherokee Bend Elementary School.
