Cross Country Teams Shine at State Meet

  • Girls cross country won its 24th state championship in program history.

  • November 9, 2021 -- The Mountain Brook High School girls cross country team won the 6A state championship on Saturday morning while the boys finished in an impressive second place. The girls' title is the 175th state championship in Mountain Brook High School athletics history.

“Our girls are now officially the fastest team in state history by a good margin,” head coach Michael McGovern said. “We ran our best when it counted and saved our best races for the end.”

Reagan Riley was the overall winner for the 6A girls finishing with a time of 17:39 (5k race). Clark Stewart finished second overall with a time of 18:13. The Spartans landed five runners in the top 10 and all 10 Spartan runners finished in the top 60. The scoring Spartans (top five runners) averaged a time of 18:26 in the championship race.

The All-State team is represented by the top 15 runners in each race and the Mountain Brook girls had six team members earn All-State.

For the boys, Davis Plowden and Clayton Collins finished within a half-second of each other in sixth and seventh place overall to secure a spot on the All-State team. The runner-up finish for the Spartans was viewed as a significant accomplishment given the fact they fell short at sectionals to Chelsea.

“On paper, our boys went into the race in third and were able to finish second which is fantastic,” McGovern said.

Scottsboro won the 6A boys division with 47 points followed by the Spartans’ 79. Chelsea finished in third place with 114 points.

The cross country and track program will take a week break before gearing up for the indoor track season starting in mid-November.
