First Grade Students Write "How To" Books

First Grade has been working on 'How To' books for the last 2 weeks. We started with brainstorming topics, choosing a topic, then using the five finger re-tell before writing our papers. Some of their topics included the following: how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, how to feed a pet, how to tie shoes, and how to make a snowman. After choosing their topics, we discussed time and order words such as first, next, then, and last. Students then wrote their book which included a topic page with a title, pictures, and at least 3 steps in their stories. Be sure to check out our photo gallery to see our young authors presenting their books.
