Spelling in Sixth Grade
The sixth-grade students have weekly spelling words. I post the spelling words in Google Classroom on Friday's for the next week. The students are able to view the words in Google Classroom or are able to download the list to their computers. This way the students are able to study their words even if they do not have internet.
Even though the students think I just pick random words, there is a process that I go through in order to select the spelling words. At the beginning of the year, the students were given a Spelling Inventory test. This test consists of words that have certain patterns in the English Language. For example, it includes words with multiple syllables, words with Vowel Consonant Vowel patterns, and words with short/long vowels. The results of this inventory tell me the individual students' strengths and weaknesses. I use the results to guide my selection of words for the weekly spelling tests. The students will take this Spelling Inventory test three times in a school year; beginning, middle, and end. By taking this inventory three times a year, I will be able to change my instruction accordingly. Of course, the goal is to see improvement.
Just a reminder, the students are able to receive extra credit for writing the spelling words and their definitions ten times each. The extra credit is due on Friday when we take the test.
