This change will be implemented for the 2009–10 school year, with a slightly extended area based on feedback from area families.
Neighborhood schools affected:
Change from Arts & Technology Academy to Roosevelt Middle School and from Churchill High School to South Eugene High School.
Geographic area affected:
South of 18th Ave., Friendly St. eastward (inclusive of both sides of Friendly St.), north of 27th Ave., and west of Lawrence Alley. Several parents suggested extending the western border of the originally proposed boundary change to include addresses on both sides of Friendly Street. This idea met the goal of keeping neighborhoods together and was adopted.
What does it mean for 4J students who live within this area?
- Adams Elementary will continue to be the neighborhood school for elementary students. Students who wish to attend a different school must request a transfer through the school choice process.
- Middle and high school students currently enrolled may:
- Attend the newly assigned neighborhood school, Roosevelt Middle or South Eugene High School. Because all affected students live within 1.5 miles of the middle school, bus transportation is not provided.
- Continue attending their current neighborhood school, Arts & Technology Academy or Churchill High School. Because students live within 1.5 miles of the middle school, bus transportation is not provided.
- Continue attending any other school the student has transferred to through the school choice process. Parents will continue to provide transportation.
- Students new to the area or advancing to the next school level (moving from elementary to middle school or from middle school to high school) will be assigned to the new neighborhood school. Students who wish to attend a different school will need to request a transfer through the school choice process.
How many students might be affected by this change?
There are 26 current middle school students in the originally proposed area. Of those, 3 attend the Arts & Technology Academy, 9 attend Roosevelt Middle School, and 14 attend other 4J middle schools. At the high school level, there are 29 students in the originally proposed area. Of those, 5 attend Churchill High School, 16 attend South Eugene High School, and 8 attend other 4J high schools. An additional 12 current 4J students live in the extended area.
What were the opportunities for community input?
- Families with 4J students within the area were sent a letter with a feedback postcard.
- Other stakeholders provided public input via an online survey, comment cards, or at five meetings held in December and early January.
- In the West College Hill area, 93% of the parents responding supported the proposed changes to the neighborhood school designations.
