The Eugene School Board in 2015 selected Dr. Gustavo Balderas to be the district’s next superintendent, beginning July 1, 2015.
The superintendent search process included extensive opportunities for public input and a candidate screening committee composed of community members and district staff.
Search Process Overview
- 4J superintendent Dr. Sheldon Berman gave notice in June 2014 that 2014–15 would be his final year with Eugene School District 4J.
- To begin the process of selecting the district’s next superintendent, the school board selected an executive search firm and appointed a citizen screening committee.
- Public input on the strengths and qualities desired in the district’s next leader was gathered. More than 1,000 community members provided input to help develop the candidate profile and position description.
- The search garnered a total of 29 applicants.
- The screening committee reviewed applications, interviewed top candidates and recommended semifinalists to the school board.
- The board selected a slate of seven semifinalists to interview.
- The board announced the three finalists on March 2.
- Parents, staff, students and other interested community members were invited to hear from the superintendent candidate finalists, submit questions to be asked, and provide input at a community forum on March 5.
- One finalist, Dr. Heather Cordie, withdrew on March 8.
- The board considered what they’d learned about the candidates and the input they’d received from staff, parents and community members, and on March 12 named Dr. Gustavo Balderas as the finalist for the position.
- The board voted unanimously on March 18 to make a formal offer of employment to Dr. Balderas.
- Dr. Balderas will be the new superintendent of Eugene School District 4J beginning July 1, 2015.
