Decision:
This change will be implemented for the 2009–10 school year.
Neighborhood schools affected:
Change from River Road Elementary School to Edison Elementary School; from Kelly Middle School to Roosevelt Middle School; and from North Eugene High School to South Eugene High School.
Geographic area affected:
East of Willamette Street, north of 6th Ave., west and south of the Willamette River. Click here for a map of the area affected.
What does it mean for 4J students who live within this area?
- Students currently enrolled may:
- Attend the newly assigned neighborhood school, Edison Elementary, Roosevelt Middle, or South Eugene High School, beginning next year. Bus transportation will be provided for elementary and middle school students.
- Continue attending their current neighborhood school, River Road Elementary, Kelly Middle, or North Eugene High School. Bus transportation will not be provided.
- Continue attending any other school the student has transferred to through the school choice process. Parents will continue to provide transportation.
- Students new to the area, starting school, or advancing to the next school level (moving from elementary to middle school or from middle school to high school) will be assigned to the new neighborhood school. Students who wish to attend a different school must request a transfer through the school choice process.
How many students might be affected by this change?
Currently, there are 4 high school students, 1 middle school student, and 1 elementary school student in the proposed area. None of the students attend their current neighborhood school. One student attends Roosevelt Middle School; 1 student attends South Eugene High School and 3 attend other 4J high schools.
What were the opportunities for community input?
- Families with 4J students within the area were sent a letter with a feedback postcard.
- Other stakeholders provided public input via an online survey, comment cards, or at five meetings held in December and early January.
- In the East Skinner Butte Historic District area, 100% of the parents responding supported the proposed changes to the neighborhood school designations.
