Decision:
This change will be implemented for the 2009–10 school year, with a slightly altered boundary based on feedback from area families.
Neighborhood schools affected:
Change from César E. Chávez Elementary School or McCornack Elementary School to Crest Drive Elementary School. Students in the extended area also will have their neighborhood middle school change from Kennedy Middle School to the Arts and Technology Academy.
Geographic area affected:
The originally proposed area for this boundary change was east of Tanner Park, south of Videra Drive, and west of Lasater Blvd. Click here for a map of the originally proposed area. Questions raised during the process led to a slight change in the proposed boundary. Neighborhood residents suggested altering the affected area so that all addresses on Tanner Park Drive would be within the McCornack neighborhood boundary, and all addresses on Southview Drive would be in the Crest Drive boundary, rather than having the boundary line divide each of those streets. This idea met the goal of keeping neighborhoods together and was adopted.
What does it mean for 4J students who live within this area?
- At the elementary school level, students currently enrolled may:
- Attend the newly assigned neighborhood school, Crest Drive Elementary, beginning next year. Bus transportation will be provided.
- Continue attending their current neighborhood school, César E. Chávez Elementary (for the region in the original boundary change proposal) or McCornack Elementary (in the extended area). Bus transportation to Chávez will not be provided. Bus transportation to McCornack will not be provided unless there is room on a bus that makes a stop in the student’s area.
- Continue attending any other school the student has transferred to through the school choice process. Parents will continue to provide transportation.
- Students new to the area or starting school will be assigned to the new neighborhood school. Students who wish to attend a different school must request a transfer through the school choice process.
- There is no change in neighborhood middle or high schools for students in the originally proposed area. These students will continue to be assigned to the Arts and Technology Academy and Churchill High School. In the extended area, the neighborhood middle school will change from Kennedy Middle School to the Arts and Technology Academy, and Churchill will remain the neighborhood high school. Students who wish to attend a different school must request a transfer through the school choice process.
How many students might be affected by this change?
There are 36 elementary school students in the originally proposed area. Of those, 3 attend César E. Chávez Elementary, 18 attend Crest Drive Elementary, and 15 attend other 4J schools. One current 4J student lives in the extended area.
What were the opportunities for community input?
- Families with elementary school students within the area were sent a letter with a feedback postcard.
- Other stakeholders provided public input via an online survey, comment cards, or at five meetings held in December and early January.
- In the Hawkins/Blacktail Drive vicinity, 83% of the parents responding supported the proposal to change the neighborhood school to Crest Drive Elementary School.
