Proposal #5: West Downtown Area

Decision:

This change will not be implemented at this time. The proposal may be reviewed again following budget decisions for the 2009–11 biennium.

Neighborhood schools that would have been affected:

Change from River Road Elementary School to Adams Elementary School; from Kelly Middle School to Roosevelt Middle School; and from North Eugene High School to South Eugene High School.

Geographic area that would have been affected:

South of 6th Ave., West of Willamette St., North of 13th Ave., East of mid-block Washington/Jefferson. Click here for a map of the area affected.

What would it have meant for 4J students who live within this area?

  • Students could have:
  • Attended the newly assigned neighborhood school, Adams Elementary, Roosevelt Middle, or South Eugene High School, with bus transportation provided for elementary and middle school students.
  • Continued attending their current neighborhood school, River Road Elementary, Kelly Middle, or North Eugene High School, with no bus transportation provided.
  • Continued attending any other school through the school choice process. Parents would have continued to provide transportation.
  • Students new to the area, starting school, or advancing to the next school level (moving from elementary to middle school or from middle school to high school) would have been assigned to the new neighborhood school. Students wishing to attend a different school would have needed to apply for a transfer through the school choice process.

How many students would have been affected by this change?

Currently, there are 28 elementary school students in the proposed area. Of those, 12 attend River Road Elementary, 0 attend Adams Elementary, and 16 attend other 4J schools. There are 10 middle school students in the area: 6 attend Kelly Middle School, 0 attend Roosevelt Middle School, and 4 attend other 4J middles schools. There are 14 high school students in the area: 7 attend North Eugene High School, 2 attend South Eugene High School, and 5 attend other 4J high schools.

What were the opportunities for community input?

  • Families with 4J students within the area were sent a letter with a feedback postcard.
  • Other stakeholders provided public input via an online survey, comment cards, or at five meetings held in December and early January.
