Board chooses City’s proposal for stadium property
The Eugene School Board has voted to move forward with the City of Eugene’s proposal to purchase the Civic Stadium properties for $4.5 million.
On February 19, 2014, the board directed staff to negotiate a purchase agreement with the City including some conditions:
- A firm commitment to proceed with the purchase within nine months from the date of the purchase and sale agreement. No time extensions will be granted.
- If the City of Eugene sells all or part of the property at a future date, the district will receive a portion of any proceeds resulting from an increase in the sales price.
- A restriction prohibiting property uses that are deemed inappropriate or incompatible with the close proximity of South Eugene High School.
- The city immediately assumes all costs of maintaining and insuring the property and all associated holding costs.
- 4J is allowed to continue to utilize the former transportation shop areas for storage of surplus furniture and equipment until closing.
The district will negotiate a purchase and sale agreement with the City of Eugene. The City’s offer is contingent on a City Council decision to be made within nine months following the execution of the purchase and sale agreement.
UPDATE: The purchase and sale agreement between the 4J and the City specifies that the City is to confirm on or before February 16, 2015. In response to a request from the City, on February 4 the school board voted to extend this date by 11 days, to February 27.
UPDATE: The City of Eugene confirmed on February 27, 2015, that it is planning to move forward with the purchase and sale agreement.
UPDATE: The property sale closed on April 27, 2015. The City of Eugene purchased the property from the school district and immediately sold most of it to the Eugene Civic Alliance, which says it plans to renovate the stadium and develop the property as a sports and recreation complex. The City retained about half an acre of the 10.2-acre property to be developed into a small park in the future, along with an easement for a narrow corridor through the site to develop into a walking and biking path, according to the City.
