Superintendent's Message - February 6, 2023

  • John Kopicki
    Greetings,

Our second semester is well underway, and February is a month filled with celebrations.

Since 1976, every U.S. President has designated the month of February as Black History Month. Cabarrus County Schools is proud to celebrate the accomplishments, achievements, and contributions that African-Americans have made to our county, state, nation and world’s history.

February is designated as Career and Technical Education Month as well.  Currently, Cabarrus County Schools has 21,269 middle and high school students enrolled in a CTE course. This is an astounding number and speaks for the quality of our district CTE program.

Also, this month, we will honor our school counselors during the week of Feb. 6th, and we celebrate our bus drivers with Love the Bus Month.

Our schools continue to celebrate their accomplishments as well. Congratulations to Weddington Hills IB World Elementary School for once again being recognized by Magnet Schools of America as a National Magnet School of Excellence; and, congratulations to the students and staff of  W.R. Odell Elementary School, which has been nominated by the North Carolina Department of Instruction for the prestigious Blue Ribbon School award.

The Board of Education has approved our 2023-24 Academic Calendar which is highlighted by a school start date of Aug. 10, 2023 with the final day of school on May 22, 2024.  This earlier start will allow us to complete our high school exams prior to winter break and also allow us to align our traditional seasonal breaks - fall, winter and spring - with the 2023-24 Early College calendar.  Traditional graduations will occur on May 23-24, 2024 prior to Memorial Day. Early College and Cabarrus Virtual Academy graduation dates are to be determined.

I wish you continued success in your academic and extra-curricular endeavors as we continue our work to educate Every Child, Every Day, Whatever it Takes.

    Stay Well,
    John
