Superintendent's Message - August 06, 2020

  • A Message from Dr. Chris Lowder, Superintendent 08/06/2020

    Superintendent Lowder

In a matter of days, we will begin the 2020-2021 school year, and there is no doubt that this year will be vastly different than years past. Yet, we remain excited to begin the year and embark on new opportunities for learning.

As you know, Cabarrus County Schools will begin the school year utilizing remote learning. However, it will not look like the remote learning from the spring. Our expectations for teaching and learning are higher, and we are better prepared to deliver instruction to our students.

You will learn more about expectations for students from your child’s school when you attend the Virtual Open House events planned for the week of Aug. 10. You can find the schedule here. Additionally, to facilitate and support our students’ remote learning, each student will receive a Chromebook. Schools will manage the distribution just as they did in the spring and will share details about their distribution plans with you.

Our School Nutrition Department will continue to provide free meals to students in our community. Here is a list of meal sites and pick-up locations beginning Aug. 17th.

As with any new school year, there are requirements and procedures that must be followed, including:
    • New state law requires all 12thgrade students to have a booster meningitis vaccine for school. If you are the parent of a senior, you will need to provide a copy of your child’s up-to-date vaccine record to their school. This vaccine can be given at your doctor’s office or at Cabarrus Health Alliance. Visit our School Health site for more information.
    • Re-enrollment is required for all students entering 6th and 9th You can complete the re-enrollment using the Scribbles on-line enrollment system from a laptop, cell phone or desktop computer. More information is available here.
    • Apply for free and reduced meal benefits for the new school year at lunchapplication.com.

We also are opening three new schools this year -- Cabarrus Virtual Academy, Hickory Ridge Elementary School and West Cabarrus High School this year. We know that the teachers, administrators and staff of those schools are eager to get started creating their school communities and welcoming families.

We can’t wait to get the new school year started! Let’s work together to make this a great year.

    Sincerely,

    Chris
