    Superintendent Lowder
Congratulations to the newest Cabarrus County Schools alumni! The Class of 2020 celebrated its commencement in a first-of-its-kind drive-thru graduation at Charlotte Motor Speedway on June 12 and 13. Special thanks to Charlotte Motor Speedway and State Superintendent Mark Johnson for making this event possible and to our high school staff who made sure each ceremony was memorable for students and their families. A photo gallery of images from each ceremony is now available. You may download images for your personal use. Information about obtaining photos taken by third-party photographers at the ceremonies will be shared later.

Planning for the new school year are under way with teams working to develop plans that address the health and safety of students and staff in areas such as transportation, curriculum and instruction, school meals, before and after school childcare, social and emotional needs, and operations. We are following guidance provided by N.C. Department of Public Instruction, N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and Cabarrus Health Alliance and will share our final plans once we have clear direction from the governor about how we will begin the 2020-2021 school year.

In preparation for fall sports and activities, CCS will allow high school athletic teams and bands to return to campus for voluntary workouts beginning July 6, 2020. Winter, spring and middle school sports will not be allowed to start on July 6th. All workouts will be conducted keeping the health and safety of our student athletes and staff in mind and in compliance with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s (NCHSAA) Reopening of Sports/Activities Summer Guidelines and guidance from the Cabarrus Health Alliance.

We also will offer a limited number of online summer driver education classes to public, private, charter, and home school students who are enrolled in a school within the CCS district. The registration deadline is June 30, 2020. More details are available on the Driver Education website.

Please make sure you are following guidance from health officials and following the 3 Ws:
    • Weara mask or cloth face covering.
    • Wait6 feet apart, practice social distancing.
    • Washyour hands or use hand sanitizer frequently.

It is important that we adhere to these important guidelines so that we can get our numbers for positive COVID-19 cases moving in a downward trend. We are eager to welcome students, staff and the community back to our campuses.
In the meantime, I wish you a safe and enjoyable summer.

    Sincerely,

    Chris
