Superintendent's Message - April 2, 2020

  • A Message from Dr. Chris Lowder, Superintendent 04/02/2020
    Superintendent Lowder

We’ve turned the page to a new month in the calendar, and school looks a lot different than it did just one month ago. Our district and our community continue to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our students, staff, parents, friends and neighbors.

Cabarrus County Schools is set to begin virtual teaching and learning on Monday, April 6th. Students will receive new classroom instruction from their teachers using tools such as Canvas and Google Classroom. This is uncharted territory for us all, so remember to be patient with yourself and each other. We are all learning. You can access information about our virtual teaching and learning plans by selecting the Extended Home Learning icon on our district website.

Our School Nutrition Program continues to provide breakfast and lunch to students throughout our community each weekday. We continue to add more meal pick-up sites and now have more than 60 in our community. Children ages 1-18 are eligible for meals. You can view the list of meal sites here.

The Cabarrus County Board of Education will hold a Public Hearing on Monday, April 6, 2020, at 6 p.m. regarding the Cabarrus County Schools budget for the fiscal year 2020-2021. The public hearing will be part of the board work session, which will be held electronically. If you would like to address the Board with a comment during the budget work session, email your comment to Melinda Abbott at melinda.abbott@cabarrus.k12.nc.us by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 6th. Comments must be limited to 400 words and must include your name, address, phone number and email address. The Board will not read anonymous comments.

Registration for kindergarten for the 2020-2021school year is open. This year, we are using a new online registration tool. Children who are 5 years old on or before August 31, 2020, are eligible to register for kindergarten. Select the Kindergarten Registration icon on our district website to begin the process.

Kindergarten Program Choice applications also are now through April 30, 2020. We offer six Program Choice options for kindergarten students. Visit the Kindergarten Program Choice page for more information about these programs. All applications can be completed on the CCS Choice and Enrollment website.

I also want to remind you to complete the 2020 Census. The Census count affects the allocation of funding for our community’s public resources such as roads, schools and hospitals. The count also affects our voice in government as it determines how congressional seats are determined, so it is important that the count is accurate. To learn more about the importance of the 2020 Census and what to expect, visit www.2020census.gov.

Continue to follow the guidance provided by health and government officials for reducing the risk of spreading COVID-19. We will continue to share updates with you about our district operations on our district website and social media sites, as well as our district mobile app.

In closing, I want to thank you for your continued patience, cooperation and support. Please know that we are working hard to anticipate issues before they arise and to address new ones as we operate in a new environment.

    Sincerely,

    Chris
