A Message from Dr. Chris Lowder, Superintendent 06/09/2020We are only days away from the end of a school year that will be remembered for being the most unusual of years. End-of-year processes and procedures for returning library books, yearbook distribution, cleaning out lockers and picking up medications are under way, and all are being conducted following health and safety guidelines to protect everyone involved. For the continued safety of our students and staff, all summer activities are canceled until August. This includes all summer camps, KIDS:PLUS and any activities or events that would involve large gatherings of people on our campuses. High school fall sports and bands will be allowed to return to campus for voluntary workouts beginning July 6, 2020. Summer workouts initially will be allowed for fall sports only. Winter, spring and middle school sports will NOT be allowed to start on July 6th. You can find additional information here. We will be sure to share any changes or updates to this schedule as they become available.
The Cabarrus County Board of Education approved a new calendar for the 2020-2021 school year at its May 11th business meeting. The new calendar, which is in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, is the result of new legislation passed by the N.C. General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Roy Cooper on May 4, 2020. Requirements for the new calendar include the addition of days designated for remote learning and earlier start (Aug. 17th) and end dates (June 3rd) for the academic year. You can find the new calendar (along with calendars for our early colleges and Wolf Meadow Elementary School) here: https://www.cabarrus.k12.nc.us/ccs-academic.
Our district, in conjunction with local health officials and state leaders, are working on plans for how we will operate safely for the new school year. We will keep you updated about plans for the new school year as the guidance and specifications are confirmed.
Our Annual Parent and Student Satisfaction Surveys are now available. This is an opportunity for you to provide feedback about critical issues, such as remote learning during school closures. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey; your feedback will help us improve. You can access the Parent Satisfaction Survey linked here or from the icon on our district website. We also are asking parents to encourage their children in grades 3-12 to complete the Student Satisfaction Survey. A link to the Student Satisfaction Survey is posted on each school’s website. The surveys will close on June 12, 2020.
Thank you for your support and cooperation this school year – not only since the March closure but also for everything before then – attending open house and curriculum night events, volunteering in our schools, cheering in the stands for our student athletes, traveling to band and VEX competitions, working on science fair projects, and chauffeuring students to and from various rehearsals and club meetings to name a few.
Thank you for entrusting us with your children and allowing us to educate them at school, and more recently, at home. Thank you for your flexibility throughout this period of closure; we all have had to shift, pivot and stretch as we learned to navigate a new way of thinking about school.
As we move into summer break, please continue to adhere to the guidelines and recommendations from health officials to stay safe and well. Enjoy your summer!
Sincerely,ChrisChris Lowder, Ed.D.Superintendent
