Greetings,

We are quickly approaching the end of the first quarter, and I want to express my thanks to our amazing community of students, school staff and parents for their patience and cooperation as we started the new school year following our COVID-19 safety protocols. We continue to revise and refine our COVID safety practices as public health conditions and mandates change.

I have spent the past two months visiting our schools. I have enjoyed meeting our students and staff. Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, there is outstanding teaching and learning happening in our schools.

We kicked off a new season of student and staff awards at our Board of Education business meeting in September and are grateful to long-time community partners Hilbish Ford and Equitable for their continued sponsorship of the Teacher of the Month and Impact Through Education awards.

We also extend our thanks and gratitude to Books-A-Million (Concord Mills) and its customers for hundreds of book donations for our schools and to Ally Financial for its $10,000 donation to Harris Road Middle School. We also are grateful for the support of sponsors of our New Teacher Orientation held in August. Thank you to Costner Law, Cato School of Education at Queen’s University, Mark III, Gardner-Webb University, Horace Mann, Allen Tate Realtors, Equitable, and Alcova Mortgage.

It is officially Program Choice season. Last week, the district hosted its annual Program Choice Fair. Applications are available online at www.cabarrus.k12.nc.us. Select the Program Choice icon from the Find it Fast section. Applications will be accepted until Dec. 17^th.

This month, we are celebrating several important observations. October is National Bullying Prevention Month, a nationwide campaign that centers around the powerful message that bullying should never be a part of childhood. CCS schools and departments will participate in activities throughout the month that promote kindness and inclusion.

October also is National Principals Month, and we are honoring our school leaders all month long. Principals are among the hardest working, yet often least recognized individuals in education. I know I am grateful for the tireless efforts of our principals as they lead their schools’ pursuit of educational excellence.

We are closing out Hispanic Heritage Month. From mid-September to mid-October, we celebrate the history, heritage, and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino Americans -- past and present.

Lastly, I want to remind everyone 1^st quarter ends on Oct. 22^nd, and there will be a Staff Development/Teacher Workday on Oct. 25^th.
