4J HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAM JUNE 19 – AUGUST 11, 2023
The 4J High School Summer Intensive Program provides opportunities for students to extend their learning into the summer months in courses designed by and led by outstanding 4J licensed educators. Course offerings reflect the curiosities and passions of both students and teachers. Courses are offered at all four high schools; however, students may register for any course, regardless of their home high school. See below for a list of dates, locations and course descriptions.
PLEASE READ: In an effort to allow as many students as possible to participate in this summer’s program please limit your registration to one class during this initial enrollment period. We will monitor registration closely and if possible, open registration to enroll in more classes early in June. One exception to this rule is if a student enrolls in Engineering Design A and also wants to enroll in Engineering Design B. Because these courses are sequential and success in Engineering B is predicated on the knowledge and skill of Engineering Design A, enrollment in both classes is allowed.

Beekeeping Basics Session 1

Location: Sheldon High School
Description: This class is an introduction to honeybees and the basics of beekeeping. This will be both a theoretical and hands on experience in beekeeping. There will be aspects of bee biology, ecology, agriculture, pollination, genetics, hive management, woodworking, and many business aspects of honeybees, pollination, and agriculture.
This will be a 6 hour per day class. Students in this course will meet daily from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM at Sheldon for in-person learning. Then we will meet again on-line on zoom from 1:00 – 4:00 PM for virtual live-streaming hive inspections, as well as building their own Langstroth beehive. Students will build and decorate their own woodenware for a Langstroth bee hive, as well as complete worksheets and write short essays to express their learning. We will go on one field trip to one of my apiary sites to do a live hive inspection and experience the removal of honey supers in the bee yard. We will provide full beekeeper suits for the field trip (Field trip day not yet determined, and may change due to weather conditions). We will then extract and bottle the honey the next day. Students/parents will need to make arrangements to pick up materials from the back parking of Sheldon High School between 11:00am and 11:30pm on the first day of class.

Description: This course will show them Chinese culture and language. Help them appreciate the Asian art and language through the brush painting and calligraphy. Contemporary World Issues

Description: This course will explore complex challenges in our society such as environmental issues, foreign affairs, social issues, social justice, politics, energy use, education and public health. Contemporary Issues is also a course, which explores current, arguable topics such as climate change, capital punishment, euthanasia, abortion, gun violence, school violence, healthcare systems, pandemics and the media. Keep in mind that when studying contemporary issues, you must examine all sides in order to make a well-informed argument. This course is not about arguing to see which side is correct; it is about analyzing all sides and understanding the opinions of varying sides when discussing controversial topics. We will conclude each topic by coming up with real-world solutions.

Description: Are you thinking about a career in Engineering? Do you like math and puzzles? This first session is a three week course for students who have passed an algebra class in middle or high school. In this course students will be introduced to applied geometry and how it relates to Engineering and Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. For their capstone project, students will demonstrate their knowledge of geometry by making a Fidget Spinner on the 3D printer.

Description: This second week builds on the first three but allows students with prior Engineering knowledge from past summer sessions or high school CAD class to join to learn a new technique of laser cutting. Student will be given a Geometry and Design Problem and asked to work with a team to solve the problem. Each student will complete their own design and solution. The capstone projects will be a keepsake box made entirely from a laser cutter.

Description: Unlock your creativity through small projects and engage your creative voice! In this class you’ll jump start your inspiration through playful crafts. Together we’ll create giant paper crafts, student designed tee-shirts, stickers, banners and even design your own mug! If you’ve ever wanted to jump into arts and crafts or learn how to create your own designs using Cricut Design Space, this is a great workshop to learn new skills, make a little mess, and have some fun! All materials are provided for multiple projects. This course is designed for those who wish to learn a variety of different crafts. In class, you will learn how to use a Cricut (electronic cutting and printing machine) to design their your own shirt and mug.
Students will develop an appreciation for hand craftsmanship by exploring the various techniques used to create projects. Hand-eye coordination skills and focus will be improved as students create a multitude of handmade items themselves. For each project, students will consider design elements and aesthetic attributes that will improve their pieces.

Musical Gender Benders

Description: This vocal arts course is designed as a three-in-one module intended to:
1) Equip the student with a rudimentary understanding of the piano keyboard and its use in self-vocalization;
2) Improve technique through customized lessons tailored to the student’s individualized vocal needs; and
3) Facilitate an immersive learning experience through an assigned character study whereby the learner will be challenged to perform a song from a musical theatre role traditionally reserved for a performer of a different gender identity.
Through these mechanisms, the student will not only have a greater understanding of their own instrument and vocal music in general, but they will also gain greater social competency through the empathy inherently learned through the practice of role reversal.

Description: Each student will be able to perform three olympic lifts, using exercise specific technique that is taught to students in a scaffolded manner over the length of the course. The three lifts will be (squat, bench and power cleans). Students will work in groups but will all be able to move in the class individually with varying ability levels. Groups will be expected to interact in a supportive manner in order to build connection with one another with the focus on technique and not on overall strength or amount of weight lifted.

Description: This course will focus on the artistic process and studio habits of mind that artists use to create original works of art. Students will learn about and explore a variety of art materials such as charcoal, pastels, paint, clay, ink and more. After exploring materials, students will get inspired, plan, create, and reflect on their art projects. Students will have full choice on what they create and how they create it. A variety of contemporary and historical artists will also be explored. The course will culminate with a final art show in which students will have the opportunity to present their works of art to others. This course is designed for both beginning and advanced art students in grades 9-12.

Sewing For Beginners

Description: Being able to sew enables us to make the most out of existing items that need minor repairs for a longer life span. Sewing is a creative skill which can help us feel more creative. It can be more budget friendly than buying something new, which has a better impact on the environment. Sewing can be a tool for teaching important life skills such as perseverance, patience, concentration, and creativity.

Description: Unified Physical Education provides a unique opportunity for students with and without disabilities to come together through ongoing educational and physical activities. The Unified Physical Education course is structured around the national physical education standards and grade-level outcomes, which include gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness. Additionally, the class supports the development of leadership skills for all students, and the empowerment of ALL students to foster an inclusive class and school-wide environment. Description: Healthy habits built in young students can lead to healthy lifestyle as adults. Teaching students how to use weight equipment and how to build strength programs without equipment is key to students staying physically active. Also teaching students goal setting and how to create and build a workout plan that is attainable and safe is a life long skill.
Volleyball is a recreational sport that can be played in many settings. Understanding the skills to pass, set, serve, and attack can lead to recreational volleyball as well as competitive volleyball. We have many different adult leagues in town filled with adults who learned volleyball in school. Learning the fundamentals of the game will help increase confidence when joining leagues and teams as adults.

Description: Engineers work with a wide variety of materials and tools. In this session, students learn how to safely use tools of the construction trade in a safe manner. When the students have passed all the tests and have been certified on the equipment, they will be given a set of plans to create a project using the equipment in the Engineering lab. It is preferable that students have working knowledge of fractions and how to measure using fractions. The capstone project will be a pen and pad holder. If time permits, there will be a second project.

Introduction to Relativity

Description: This course is an exploration of the fascinating world of relativity. Students will dive deep into the fundamental concepts of special and general relativity. Through interactive presentations, group discussions, and hands-on activities, students will explore topics such as the Lorentz transformations, time dilation and length contraction, and black holes.
Students will learn to solve problems using ideas of relativity. They will also learn about the twin paradox, space-time diagrams, and what relativity teaches us about the nature of spacetime. Students will also learn about the application of these ideas to our modern life, such as GPS technology.
Students will use a research-grade interferometer to perform hands-on experiments that illustrate the concepts of relativity, including how the speed of light is the same for all observers.
NOTE: This course is designed to give students a solid understanding of the underpinnings of the theory of special relativity. Description: Quilting As An Art Form – Students will learn to make a quilt that they can keep as their own, give as a gift, or donate to a person in need. Sewing is a life skill that comes up over the course of every person’s lifetime. From sewing on a lost button right before a job interview to designing and sewing a dress/shirt for a special occasion, to making a quilt for a new family member or to add a section to a pride quilt. Students will learn how to choose color schemes, use a pattern, rotary cutter, quilting rulers and mats, operate a sewing machine machine, hand or machine quilt, and bind a quilt.

El programa intensivo de verano de las preparatorias 4J brinda oportunidades para que los estudiantes amplíen su aprendizaje durante los meses de verano en cursos diseñados y dirigidos por destacados educadores del 4J con licencia. Los cursos ofrecidos reflejan las curiosidades y pasiones de los estudiantes y maestros. Los cursos se ofrecen en las cuatro preparatorias; sin embargo, los estudiantes pueden matricularse en cualquier curso, independientemente de su preparatoria local. A continuación está la lista de fechas, lugares y descripciones de los cursos.
NOTA: En un esfuerzo por permitir que la mayor cantidad de estudiantes posible participe en el programa de este verano, limita tu registro a una clase durante este período de matrícula inicial. Supervisaremos el registro de cerca y, si es posible, abriremos el registro para que puedas registrarte en más clases a principios de junio. Una excepción a esta regla es por ejemplo si un estudiante se registra en Diseño de ingeniería A, también puede registrarse en Diseño de ingeniería B. Debido a que estos cursos son secuenciales y el éxito en Ingeniería B se basa en el conocimiento y la habilidad de Diseño de ingeniería A, la matrícula en ambas clases está permitida.

Esta clase es de 6 horas por día. Los estudiantes de este curso se reunirán todos los días de 9:00 a. m. a 12:00 p.m. en la Sheldon para aprender en persona. Luego nos reuniremos nuevamente en línea por Zoom de 1:00 p. m. a 4:00 p.m. para realizar inspecciones de colmenas virtuales en vivo, así como para construir tu propia colmena Langstroth. Los estudiantes construirán y decorarán sus propios artículos de madera para una colmena de abejas Langstroth, así como también completarán hojas de trabajo y escribirán ensayos cortos para expresar su aprendizaje. Descripción: Este curso de artes vocales está diseñado como un módulo de tres en uno con la intención de:
1) Equipar al estudiante con una comprensión rudimentaria del teclado del piano y su uso en la auto vocalización;
2) Mejorar la técnica a través de lecciones personalizadas adaptadas a las necesidades vocales individualizadas del estudiante; y

Descripción: Este curso es una exploración del fascinante mundo de la relatividad. Los estudiantes se profundizarán en los conceptos fundamentales de la relatividad especial y general. Descripción: Use técnicas forenses del mundo real para extraer ADN de sus folículos pilosos o células de la mejilla, y luego use la amplificación por PCR y la electroforesis para tomar las huellas dactilares de su propio ADN. Descripción: Introducción a la Robótica VEX ofrece una oportunidad para que los estudiantes desarrollen una amplia gama de habilidades útiles para las vías de educación STEM y la fuerza laboral. El desarrollo de habilidades y objetivos orientados a tareas son el énfasis en este curso intensivo de dos semanas. La plataforma de hardware VEX V5, la aplicación informática asociada, la tecnología de comunicación digital y los sistemas electromecánicos son ejemplos de lo que experimentará el estudiante. Descripción: El curso explorará las raíces de la música rock (Blues, Jazz, Country, Gospel), sus primeros años, desarrollos durante los años sesenta, setenta y ochenta, y concluirá con un examen de la importancia social del hip hop. El centro de la clase será un examen de la conexión social y cultural de la música popular con los temas del día. Los temas pueden incluir el rechazo del rock a la conformidad de los años cincuenta, el valor social y político de la música durante los movimientos por los derechos civiles y contra la guerra, la reacción a la decadencia social y económica, y las poderosas declaraciones políticas y sociales del hip hop (la versión limpia).

Descripción: Hacer colchas como una forma de arte: los estudiantes aprenderán a hacer una colcha que pueden conservar como propia, regalar o donar a una persona necesitada. La costura es una habilidad para la vida que surge a lo largo de la vida de cada persona. Desde coser un botón perdido justo antes de una entrevista de trabajo hasta diseñar y coser un vestido/camisa para una ocasión especial, hacer una colcha para un nuevo miembro de la familia o agregar una sección a una colcha de orgullo. Los estudiantes aprenderán a cómo elegir esquemas de color, usar un patrón, un cortador giratorio, reglas y tapetes para acolchar, operar una máquina de coser, acolchar a mano o a máquina y a atar la colcha.
