Prior to my start in education, I worked in the profession of architecture for four years. I have an undergraduate degree in art from the University of Alabama and a graduate degree in architecture from Yale University. I have taught art for four years at the middle school level, and worked briefly as an adjunct art instructor at the college level. This is my ninth year at MBHS. I look forward to bringing an exciting and challenging program to the students at Mountain Brook High School.

Teaching art and guiding the creative growth of a child is a profoundly rewarding experience. Through my job, I have the privilege of witnessing and directing the formative art-making experiences of my students. Most importantly though, I have the opportunity to watch this bit of knowledge they gain develop into a passion.
High school students especially value the opportunity for self expression through their work. In my class, they create art which allows them this chance, while simultaneously developing a set of skills.

Ultimately, students are able to create something that they value and care about, as they build their self confidence through the process of working with their hands. I am beginning my ninth year currently at Mountain Brook High School. I hope to bring the full breadth of my knowledge and experiences into the classroom.

Art requires a synthesis of skills. The ability to visualize space and form at a conceptual level must be developed. Simultaneously, students must execute their ideas in a variety of media with an emphasis on craftsmanship and presentation.
Ultimately, through the expression of visual concepts and ideas, the spatial reasoning aptitude of the student is increased. This skill obviously forms the basis for all artistic endeavors. However, it can be applied in the design professions as well, such as graphic design, interior design and architecture.
These are the values that I want to share with the students concerning their creative growth. It is perhaps driven in part by my own experiences in the fine and applied arts. Fundamentally, I want them to recognize that their sensibilities and talents have an extension not only within, but beyond the traditional means of artistic production.
