The Mountain Brook Speech and Debate Team has a rich history whose roots date back to 1967, with victories on the local and the national level. Mountain Brook coaches and debaters have been recognized for numerous achievements individually and as a team. Our speech and debate competitors participate in Congress, Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas, and Policy debate events, including a number of individual speaking events. Students participate in tournaments hosted by Harvard University, Yale University, Stanford University, and many more colleges and high schools across the country. Since Covid restrictions made travel less accessible, the team has transitioned to virtual debates, often competing against teams from all over the United States, from the comfort and safety of their own bedrooms, right here at home. The team belongs to the National Speech and Debate Association, a competitive debate league that governs the rules, norms, and expectations for the activity. Members may also be invited to join the NSDA Honor Society, provided they meet eligibility and grade requirements.
