The 2023-2024 school year will be Dr. Kustos's eighth at Mountain Brook High School and 20th year of teaching at the high school level.  He has taught the following mathematics courses: algebra 2 (advanced), precalculus (regular and advanced), calculus (AP - AB and BC levels), calculus 3 (dual enrollment), linear algebra (dual enrollment), abstract algebra, number theory, and probability.  This year he will be teaching advanced precalculus; dual enrollment calculus 3 (in the fall); dual enrollment linear algebra (in the spring); and accelerated algebra 2 with stats and precalculus, a course he designed and piloted in his first year at MBHS.  He is also the math team sponsor at Mountain Brook High School.

Dr. Kustos graduated from Hoover High School (1997) and has earned a Bachelor of Science (2000, summa cum laude) degree in Mathematics from Auburn University; a Master of Science (2003) degree in Mathematics from Auburn University, where his thesis topic was on the topology of adjunction spaces and Borsuk's homotopy extension theorem; and a Doctor of Philosophy (2010) degree in Secondary Curriculum & Instruction for Mathematics from The University of Alabama, where his dissertation topic was on the difficulties students have with the heuristic of representativeness in combinatorics and probability.  His doctoral dissertation can be found here.

Dr. Kustos is married and has a daughter—he loves spending time with his family.  He also enjoys listening to and collecting records and music; reading; listening to podcasts; watching movies; playing ultimate; bowling; riding bicycles; and working crossword puzzles, logic puzzles, and Sudokus.
