GUIDELINES FOR DETERMINING CLASS SIZE
SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS
J-40
The Mountain Brook Board of Education has recognized a need to adjust class size according to the number of special needs students enrolled in a given class.
A weighted child count scale will be utilized as follows:
Non-exceptional Student:........................................... 1.00
Learning Disabled Student: ........................................ 1.25
Hearing Impaired Student:.......................................... 1.25
Mentally Retarded Student:........................................ 1.50
Multi-disabled Student:............................................... 2.00
Orthopedically Impaired Student :................................ 2.00
Other Health Impaired Student:......................... 1.25 to 1.75
Emotionally Conflicted Student :....................... 1.25 to 2.00
Speech and Language Impaired Student: .................... 1.00
Visually Impaired Student: .......................................... 1.50
Identified 504 (ADHD) Student: ........................ 1.25 to 1.75
Gifted :............................................................ 1.00 to 1.25
In order to achieve a numerical balance among classes, an adjusted class size will be calculated by employing a weighted count. For example, according to the weighted scale, two visually impaired students (1.5 + 1.5) equal three non-exceptional students (1 + 1 + 1). This procedure parallels the weighted formula used by the state department to allocate funds. This procedure is to be used as a guideline when possible.
