School Board Selects Finalists for Vacancies

Board will interview finalists and vote to select new members next week

The Eugene School Board has identified finalist candidates for appointment to the board, and will conduct interviews and vote to select two in meetings next week.

The board is seeking to fill two positions vacated by elected board members who have resigned. In accordance with state law, the remaining board members will appoint district residents to complete their terms, serving through June 30, 2023.

A total of 38 community members applied for appointment to the board and four later withdrew from consideration. Applicants were invited to speak briefly to the board on April 20. Board members shared their appreciation for all those who volunteered to serve our community in this role.

After considering candidates’ applications and initial statements, board members conducted several rounds of balloting and identified nine finalist candidates to move forward for further interviews and consideration for appointment. One of the selected finalists, Deborah Dailey, chose to withdraw from consideration following the April 20 board meeting.

The board plans to interview the finalists in a work session on Monday, April 25. Later in the week, in a special meeting on Wednesday, April 27, the board is scheduled to ballot to select two candidates to appoint to the vacancies.

School board meetings are streamed online (video and audio) and broadcast live on the radio (KRVM 1280 AM and 98.7 FM). Meetings held on-site are open to the public to attend in person; seating is limited and requests to attend should be submitted in advance (request form).

La junta entrevistará a los finalistas y votará para seleccionar nuevos miembros la próxima semana

La Junta Escolar de Eugene identificó a los candidatos finalistas para su nombramiento en la junta, y llevará a cabo entrevistas y votará para seleccionar dos en reuniones la próxima semana.

La junta busca llenar dos puestos vacantes de miembros elegidos de la junta que renunciaron recientemente. De acuerdo con la ley estatal, los miembros restantes de la junta designarán a dos residentes del distrito para que completen sus mandatos hasta el 30 de junio de 2023.

Board will hear from applicants and select finalists on April 20

The Eugene School Board is seeking two new board members. Following the resignation of two elected directors, the remaining board members will appoint district residents to complete their terms, serving through June 30, 2023.

School board positions are non-partisan and are not connected to any specific region. Board members must be registered voters and must have lived in the district for at least one year immediately preceding their appointment. Employees of Eugene School District 4J and of charter schools within the district are not eligible for appointment.

District residents were invited to apply between March 31 and April 18, 2022, and a total of 38 community members responded and submitted applications to serve on the board.

2022–23 School Calendar Dates Pending Approval

Key dates for next school year will be set pending board approval of the 2022–23 academic calendars.

Tentative key dates: 

• Orientation Day for Grade 9: Tue., September 6
• First Day of School (Except Grades 7 & 8): Wed., September 7
• First Day of School for Grades 7 & 8: Thu., September 8
• Winter Break: Mon., December 19–Mon., January 2 + Tue., January 3 (staff work day)
• Spring Break: Mon., March 27–Fri., March 31 + Mon., April 3 (staff work day)
• Last Day of School: Thu., June 15 (or later if weather makeup days are needed) 

 

The school board is slated to review the proposed 2022–23 academic calendars at its next regular board meeting on April 20 and vote on approval on May 4.

Parent Information Session on Youth Self-Harm

District partners with community organizations to hold meeting on cutting, other self-injury behaviors

Eugene School District 4J is hosting a community talk with Dr. Tiffany Brown for parents and community members to learn more about helping children who exhibit signs of self-harm, such as cutting.

The free parent information session, Self-Harm & Cutting: Suicidal & Non-Suicidal Self Injury, will be held on Monday, April 25, 6–7:30 p.m., in the Sheldon High School auditorium.

Come learn what to do when your child exhibits signs of self-harm, what it means, and where to seek help. Spanish and ASL interpretation provided.

Speaker Dr. Tiffany Brown, a licensed family therapist at the University of Oregon, will discuss the steps that parents can take if a child is cutting or engaging in other self-harming behavior, what it means, and where to seek help.

Dr. Brown is a senior lecturer and clinical director in the Couples and Family Therapy graduate program at the University of Oregon. She has done extensive research on self-harm and the intersection of family and school systems.

The Oregon Health Authority and Lines for Life Suicide Rapid Response Program is funding the event in collaboration with Lane County Public Health.

This is one in a series of community events 4J has planned to address youth mental health and suicide prevention.

Notice of Budget Committee Meeting

A public meeting of the budget committee of Eugene School District 4J, Lane County, State of Oregon, to discuss the budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, will be held on April 25, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to receive the budget message and to receive comment from the public on the budget.

The budget committee meeting will take place virtually and will be open to the public via Zoom webinar. The webinar link can be accessed through meeting materials posted to BoardBook at tinyurl.com/4jboardmeetings. The public can also listen via live radio broadcast on KRVM 1280-AM or 98.7 FM, or stream the meeting audio online at www.4j.lane.edu/stream.

This is a public meeting where deliberation of the budget committee will take place.

Public Comment: Any person may comment on the budget. The budget committee sets aside time at each meeting to hear comments and questions from the public. Each speaker is limited to three minutes, and cannot give their time to another speaker. Community members can request to sign up to speak to the budget committee by submitting a request online by 8 a.m. on the day of the meeting.

An additional meeting is scheduled on May 2, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. for approval of the budget. An additional meeting may be held on May 16 if needed.

The Eugene School District is soliciting applications for new school board members. Two elected directors have resigned from the board and the school board will select two district residents to appoint to complete their terms, serving through June 30, 2023.

Eugene School Board positions are non-partisan and are not connected to any specific region. Under Oregon law, board members must be registered voters in Eugene School District 4J, and must have lived in the district for at least the past one year at the time of appointment. Employees of Eugene School District 4J and of charter schools within the district are not eligible for appointment.

To be considered for appointment, please submit an application by Monday, April 18, at 8 a.m. Applicants will be invited to speak to the board for 3–5 minutes on Wednesday, April 20. The board will select finalists and conduct interviews on Monday, April 25, then vote to select two applicants to appoint to the board on Wednesday, April 27.

These sessions will be held in person (sign up to attend in person) with live streaming online (video and audio) and live broadcast on the radio (KRVM 1280 AM and 98.7 FM).

On Monday, April 11, the school board held a special meeting. The board opened the meeting and recessed to executive session (not open to the public) to consider records exempt by law from public inspection pursuant to ORS 192.660 (2)(f), including personnel records ORS 192.660 (2)(a). When the executive session concluded the board chair returned and closed the special meeting.

There’s one last day to volunteer or nominate others to participate in interview panels with superintendent candidate finalists. The nomination deadline has been extended through Monday, April 11. Interview question submissions will be received until Monday, April 25.

The school board is committed to the authentic engagement of our community and valuing everyone’s voice in the superintendent selection process. Students, families, staff and other community members are invited to participate in the next stage of the process in two ways: Nominate yourself or others to participate in interview panels, and/or submit questions for the interviews. Community members also will be invited to observe finalist interviews and provide feedback later this spring.

Interview Panel Nominations

The board is calling for nominations of stakeholders to take part in a series of panel interviews with the superintendent finalist candidates.

There is one week left for people to nominate themselves or others to serve as interview panel participants by completing the nomination form.

Spaces are limited to several dozen and broad participation is encouraged. The panel interview groups will be organized by role, such as students, families, teachers and licensed specialists, classified staff, administrators, supervisors and professionals, and other community members. Each panel will be made up of 10–12 people and will be demographically representative of the 4J community. If more than 12 people are nominated for a panel, members will be randomly selected while still ensuring demographic representation.

Participation will require three meetings: Two training and planning sessions, and the interview date. Each panel will have the support of the board’s consultant, Alma Advisory Group, to engage in anti-bias training and finalize interview questions. Staff will be supported to participate during work hours or outside their regular work day. Details will be shared once panelists are selected.

La participación requerirá de tres reuniones: dos sesiones de capacitación y planificación, y la hora de la entrevista. Cada panel contará con el apoyo del consultor de la junta, Alma Advisory Group, para completar la capacitación anti prejuicios y finalizar las preguntas de la entrevista. Se apoyará al personal para que participe durante las horas de trabajo (por ejemplo, con tiempo libre pagado de sus deberes regulares y cobertura sustituta, según corresponda) o se le compensará en un contrato extendido o en una hoja de tiempo por horas fuera de su jornada laboral habitual. 234 staff and volunteers nominated for educator excellence awards

Eugene School District 4J staff and volunteers make a difference in the lives of students every day. In a show of immense support, a record-breaking 234 outstanding employees and volunteers have been nominated by parents, students and colleagues for the 2022 ACE (A Champion in Education) Awards.

ACE Award “Champions” will be selected in four categories: Teachers and Licensed Specialists, Classified Staff, Administrators and Supervisors, and Volunteers. A special Lifetime Achievement Award also may be announced. Each champion will receive a $250 grant from Eugene Education Foundation (EEF) for a school or program of their choosing.

All nominees will be celebrated and champions named at a virtual celebration held via Zoom and broadcast live on 4J’s Facebook page on Tuesday, May 10, at 6 p.m. Join us!

Volunteers Help Schools

Parent and community volunteers provide essential supports to 4J schools

Volunteers are essential! In non-pandemic circumstances, thousands of parents and community members volunteer to support 4J schools each year. While visitors and volunteers in schools are limited due to the pandemic, dedicated volunteers are providing a variety of essential supports this school year.

Volunteers are serving in 4J schools to support essential needs for health and safety and critical instructional supports such as small group instruction. Volunteers also are needed to help outdoors with landscape maintenance.

Each school team has identified different needs and volunteer opportunities. If you would like to volunteer to provide essential supports, please ask your school about available volunteer opportunities. Volunteers must be fully vaccinated and complete a background check process.

Los voluntarios escolares brindan apoyo esencial a las escuelas de 4J

Cada escuela ha identificado diferentes necesidades y oportunidades de voluntariado. Si desea ser voluntario para brindar apoyo esencial, pregunte en su escuela sobre las oportunidades de voluntariado disponibles. Los voluntarios que puedan tener contacto con los estudiantes o que puedan ingresar a un edificio escolar deben estar completamente vacunados y completar un proceso de verificación de antecedentes.
