Local and regional travel includes travel to conferences, employee travel between work sites, and employee travel while transporting students on field trips.
The District provides auto liability coverage for all employees, approved volunteers and agents (all referred to as “the driver.”) over 21 years of age while driving:
- District-owned vehicles including leased or chartered vehicles.
- Personal vehicles on district business. Coverage is only for liability above the individual’s personal coverage.
In District-owned vehicles, coverages include:
- Liability for property damage or bodily injury to a third party, as a result of an accident caused by the negligence of the driver.
- In general, replacement of personal property that is stolen from a District-owned vehicle or a personal vehicle while on District-approved travel is not covered under any District policies.
In personal vehicles, coverages include:
- Liability for property damage or bodily injury to a third party, as a result of an accident caused by the negligence of the driver. Coverage is only for damages above the limits of the driver’s personal policy.
- Coverage above the limits of the driver’s personal policy if the driver is involved in an accident with an uninsured vehicle.
- In general, replacement of personal property that is stolen from a District-owned vehicle or a personal vehicle while on District-approved travel is not covered under any District policies.
To qualify for the District’s auto liability insurance, the individual employee or volunteer must:
- Be over 21 years of age.
- Be approved by the school principal.
- Carry state-mandated personal auto insurance with at least $25,000/$50,000 public liability coverage and $10,000 property damage coverage.
- Use a booster seat for all children who are under the age of six or who weigh less than 60 pounds.

Rental Car Use
When staff are using rental cars for District business, collision and comprehensive coverage are automatic if the vehicles have been rented by the District.
To ensure District coverage for rental cars:
- A District credit card or purchase order must be used to rent the vehicle.
- School District 4J must appear on the rental agreement as the renting agent. Individual employees should not list themselves as the renter. If your name or the name of another District employee appears on the rental agreement as the renting party, collision and comprehensive coverage are not available through the District.
Staff are covered by district liability insurance for claims of negligence which might include the following types of incidents:
- A teacher damages property belonging to a third party and a claim is brought against the District to recover the replacement cost.
- A parent whose child was injured on a field trip claims the injury is the result of staff negligence and threatens to file a lawsuit.
