On the Menu: New School Meals Rolling Out

October menus feature new school meal offerings

What’s new on your kid’s lunch tray? Eugene School District 4J is making changes to our school food services incrementally over time, as school food service management is brought in-house after more than 20 years of contracting with large food services management companies.

Some changes already can be seen this fall, with reusable utensils and food waste composting being implemented at elementary schools, and new menu options being developed in our test kitchen and introduced in school cafeterias each month.

New menu offerings in October include pesto panini, chicken or eggplant cordon bleu with parmesan pasta, oven-roasted chicken or tofu with polenta, and Asian-inspired salad with steamed edamame.

4J Nutrition Services provides healthy, fresh and local options including intentional vegetarian options and unlimited fruits and vegetables with every meal.

Over time, students will enjoy more scratch-made items, fewer highly processed foods, and a greater offering of locally grown and produced foods. Feedback will be requested as new items are tested and procurement of more local foods becomes available.

Menus are subject to change; the online menu will have the most current information. Menus for October 2019 are available online in the Titan Family Portal: Select “Check District Menu,” enter “Eugene” in the search field, then click on the district name. Filter to your student’s school, use the arrows to rotate to the menu week desired, and select Breakfast or Lunch to see the current menu. Hover over any item to see nutrition information, or use filters for allergens and dietary restrictions.

Stay tuned for more updates as the district’s transition to local management of school nutrition services progresses.
