Wildfire smoke is affecting air quality in the Eugene area. We take our staff and students’ health and safety very seriously and closely monitor air quality conditions to guide decision making around outdoor activities.
All outdoor activities have been canceled Tuesday–Friday, September 8–11, for the safety of students and staff. (This article was posted on Tuesday morning and has been updated with additional cancelations each day as the extremely poor air quality has continued.)
The cancelation includes student technology distribution at many 4J elementary schools and some middle and high schools. The student device pickup days will be rescheduled. There is no food service in this transition week between summer and school year food service. 4J schools are not currently holding any student athletic activities.
The Oregon Health Authority advises that parents of children sensitive to air quality should watch the smoke forecast to decide when to limit their child’s activities and follow their health care providers’ advice about prevention and treatment of symptoms. Children who may be more sensitive to air pollution include those with asthma, respiratory infection, lung or heart disease.
