New program will start with grades K–1
Parent info night Monday, Feb. 13
Starting in fall 2017, a new language immersion program will teach students in both English and Mandarin Chinese.
Parents are invited to an information night about the new Chinese immersion program on Monday, February 13, at 5:30 p.m., at the 4J Education Center, 200 N. Monroe St. in Eugene.
The new Mandarin Chinese program will begin with students in kindergarten and first grade, and will grow to the next grades year by year. At this time the program will be co-located with Family School at the former Crest Drive Elementary School site at 1155 Crest Drive in the Churchill region. It is expected to grow over time to a K–12 program continuing at Kennedy Middle School and Churchill High School.
This new program brings the number of language immersion programs in the Eugene School District to five, expanding on the four current K–12 programs that begin with Spanish at River Road/El Camino del Río Elementary School, Spanish at Buena Vista Elementary, French at Charlemagne Elementary, and Japanese at Yujin Gakuen Elementary.
Applications for the new Chinese immersion program are being accepted now. Admission is by lottery. District residents may apply now through Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. Non-residents may apply March 1–April 1.
