New program starts with grades K–1 in 2017
One-fifth of the planet’s population speaks Chinese. Now some students in Eugene School District 4J will learn the language in their daily public school program.
Starting in fall 2017, a new language immersion program will teach students in both English and Mandarin Chinese. The Eugene School Board on January 11 approved a proposal to launch the new educational program.
The new Mandarin Chinese program will begin with students in kindergarten and first grade, and will grow to the ensuing grades year by year. At this time the program will be co-located with Family School at the former Crest Drive Elementary School site at 1155 Crest Drive in the Churchill region.
Information nights about the new Chinese immersion program will be held at the 4J Education Center, 200 N. Monroe St. in Eugene, on Monday, January 30, at 7:00 p.m., and Monday, February 13, at 5:30 p.m.

This new program brings the number of language immersion programs in the Eugene School District to five. It is expected to grow over time to a K–12 program continuing at Kennedy Middle School and Churchill High School.
The previously existing programs are:
- Spanish in the Sheldon region (at Buena Vista Elementary, Monroe Middle and Sheldon High School)
- Spanish in the North Eugene region (at River Road/El Camino del Río Elementary, Kelly Middle and North Eugene High School)
- French in the South Eugene region (at Charlemagne Elementary, Roosevelt Middle and South Eugene High School)
- Japanese in the North Eugene region (at Yujin Gakuen Elementary, Kelly Middle and North Eugene High School)
