Plan developed to guide improvements at Gilham
The Eugene School District 4J bond measure resoundingly approved by voters in May 2013 included funds to improve and expand Gilham Elementary School, a neighborhood school in the Sheldon region in northeast Eugene.
To map the route forward, the district hired GMA Architects, working with Bassetti Architects, to provide a master plan for the Gilham school facility.
Key elements identified before the bond measure included connecting separate classroom buildings with indoor hallways, new restrooms, accessibility upgrades, and additional classroom space to accommodate full-day kindergarten. The master planning process validated these key elements and also discovered additional needs including entry security, heating and ventilation, classroom capacity, and vehicular and pedestrian circulation.
As these recommendations are more than can be addressed using the funds allocated in the current bond measure, the design team recommended a phased approach to complete the work.
