Learn more about how annual state tests are changing
Things are changing in your student’s classroom, in homework, and in assessments of his or her learning.
Oregon and more than 40 other states have developed and adopted shared academic expectations, called the Common Core State Standards. They are clear, consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in math and English language arts in order to be ready to graduate with an Oregon diploma, ready for college, careers and life.
With new standards, we need new tools to measure student learning of the standards. This spring the new Smarter Balanced assessments will replace the old OAKS tests for reading, writing and math.
The Oregon Department of Education will hold a Smarter Balanced information and listening session, in partnership with the Oregon PTA and Eugene School District 4J, on January 27. This forum will feature Rob Saxton, Oregon’s Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Derek Brown, ODE’s Director of Assessment.
- Tuesday, Jan. 27, 7 p.m., North Eugene High School, 200 Silver Lane (RSVP and invite your friends)
Eugene School District 4J also will hold several Smarter Balanced parent information nights. Please join us to learn more about Oregon’s new state tests in math and language arts. The presentation will cover why the state tests have changed, how they will be implemented, and concrete examples of how to help your student. The format will engage attendees in hands-on experience.
