Common Core State Standards: What You Need to Know

K–12 parents invited to information nights about changing standards for student learning

What are the Common Core State Standards? How are these new expectations for student learning different from the standards Oregon had in place before? Most of all, what do these changes mean for your student, and for you?

Please join us at a parent information night this month to learn more about Oregon’s changing academic standards and how together we can support your student’s success in school and beyond.

Things are changing in your student’s classroom, in homework, and in assessments of his or her learning. Oregon and more than 40 other states across the country have developed and adopted shared academic expectations, called the Common Core State Standards. They are clear, consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in math and English language arts in order to be ready to graduate with an Oregon diploma, ready for college, careers and life. It’s all to help students develop the knowledge and higher-level thinking skills they need for their future success.

We’ll start by sharing information for parents of all ages, then break out to different groups for parents of elementary students and middle and high school students.

Spanish interpretation will be provided at each information night. An additional meeting for Spanish-speaking families will be scheduled soon.
