Old heating oil tanks are coming out of the ground
School’s out for summer, but it’s not vacation time for local contractors. Work is underway across the Eugene School District, thanks to the bond measures voters passed in 2011 and 2013.
One important summer project isn’t in classrooms or school buildings, but outside of them. Old underground oil tanks are being removed from nine 4J school properties.
The schools now are heated with natural gas–fired boilers, which run cleaner, cheaper, and more efficiently. Since there is no longer a need to store large amounts of heating oil, the old oil tanks are being removed to eliminate the chance they’ll leak in the future.
Oil tanks have already been removed this summer at the Arts & Technology Academy, Camas Ridge, Dunn, Kennedy, Monroe, Parker, River Road/El Camino del Río and Spring Creek sites. Work is underway now to remove the tank at Roosevelt Middle School.
